Not all injuries require surgery. Some conditions can be treated using non-operative methods. Non-operative treatment procedures refer to medical interventions or therapies that do not involve surgery. These include physical therapy, bracing, pain management, and non-invasive procedures.

Medications

Prescription or over-the-counter drugs can be used to manage pain, inflammation, or underlying medical conditions.

Bracing

Orthopedic bracing and orthopedic splints protect, stabilize, support and correct injuries or abnormal alignment through the process of rehabilitation and recovery. They are used in injury rehabilitation, injury prevention, osteoarthritic care, post-operative care and more. There are different kind of braces available, including:

• Elbow braces, tennis elbow braces
• Neck, back and shoulder braces
• Knee braces, ankle braces, leg braces
• Wrist braces, thumb and hand splints
• Hip, groin and thigh braces

Injections

Injections can be an effective way to manage pain, inflammation, or other medical conditions. Here are some common types of injections used as non-operative procedures:

• Corticosteroid Injections: These injections deliver powerful anti-inflammatory medications directly into a joint or the area surrounding it. They are commonly used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, or tendinitis.
• Hyaluronic Acid Injections: These are typically used to treat osteoarthritis. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of joint fluid that acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Injections can help improve joint function and reduce pain.
• Viscosupplementation: This involves injecting a thick gel-like substance into a joint, typically the knee, to provide lubrication and cushioning. It's used for osteoarthritis to relieve pain and improve joint function.
• Steroid Injections: These injections of steroids are given directly into the affected joint for severe pain when use of NSAIDs does not bring much relief. Steroids are very strong anti-inflammatory drugs and if used orally cause various side effects on other body systems. Local analgesics that prevent the sensation of pain are sometimes given along with steroids in the same shot to bring relief quickly.
