Ligaments are bands of tough, elastic connective tissue that surround a joint to give support and limit the joint’s movement. Often occurring from a sports injury, ligament damage causes the knee joint to become unstable. It prevents the patient from normal activities as it disables the leg to move (turn, bent, twist)1. It can be caused by many factors, including a jump that ended badly, sudden stopping, sudden change of direction or simply a collision. One of the treatment options is a surgical reconstruction of torn knee ligaments
The surgery involves replacing the torn ligament with a healthy tendon. It can be inserted inside the knee to hold the joint together and prevent the instability. The tendon usually comes from the patient’s leg (autograft) but it can also be taken from an organ donor (allograft).
If you’re having knee problems, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with one of our orthopedic surgeons who will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for the procedure. You can also have a look at our Hip and Knee Center on our website, contact us or request an appointment with one our doctors.
